Beavers visit The Tab

On Thursday 20th January 2011 we took our Beaver Scout colony to visit the Dursley Tabernacle Church – known as “the Tab” – at the junction of Kingshill Road and Parsonage Street.

The Beaver Scouts, leaders and parent helpers were warmly welcomed by Simon Helme, the Tab’s minister.

Simon gave a fascinating talk to the children about the history of the Tab, and how it can trace its origins back to the preaching of George Whitefield in 1742. The church founded one of the first Sunday schools in Britain, and Simon explained why this was so crucial to the education and literacy skills of the poorest children at the time.

We had a tour of the Tab and the Beaver Scouts enjoyed climbing up into the pulpit and seeing the original pews. They also loved the large drum kit and asked the minister many interesting questions. This was really helpful to us as the Scout Association continues to develop the spiritual potential of all its young people.

We ended the visit with our usual closing prayer circle and this felt especially poignant in this friendly and comfortable place of worship. We’re very grateful to Simon and the friendly folk of the Dursley Tab for making us all feel welcome.
