New Badge & New Banner
A competition was held recently to design a new badge especially for the 1st Dursley Scout Group. There were many excellent entries from the young members and all of the entrants must be congratulated for the quality of their drawings which made choosing a winner very difficult!
The winner was Sam Tucker and the runner up Travis Williams.

The badge shows a Pederson bicycle, closely associated with Dursley with a Roman spear above it paying tribute to the Roman connection in the area.
A new banner has also been made which incorporates the new badge. The banner will be put up at the many events and camps attended to tell everyone that 1st Dursley Scouts have arrived!

A Message from the Chairman of the District Executive Committee, David L’Oste-Brown
May I begin by saying how pleased I am that Cotswold Vale District has secured the services of Andy Cole who is proving to be a particularly dynamic and inspiring District Commissioner. Following Andy’s appointment, I was delighted to accept his invitation to take on the role of Chairman of the District Executive Committee and I look forward to my new challenge and to supporting the District in my new role. I am also delighted that Andy has secured the services of his colleague, Deborah Whitfield, as District Secretary. I would particularly like to extend my sincere thanks to my predecessor Ian Hey, for his years in the role as well as to Gerry Bannister for all his many years in many different roles but particularly as our former District Secretary.
I am also pleased to be continuing my role as Nights Away Advisor and thank all of you for keeping me informed of these events, particularly since I retired as District Commissioner. Please will all Leaders remember that when planning an activity which involves the young people spending one or more nights away from home, from NAN must be completed. The form should be sent to Andy Cole, District Commissioner and a copy sent to me. If the event takes you out of District and is not on Scout owned premises, the form should also be sent to the Host DC (contact details may be obtained from Gilwell Information Centre). NAN forms are available from Gilwell or downloaded from www.scoutbase.org.uk.
Enjoy your Scouting and if there is anything I can do by way of support, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Meet ... Lisa Taylor, new Assistant District Commissioner, Cub Scouts
Lisa started her Scouting career in September of 2007 having been recruited to lead the Cub team at 1st Cam alongside her husband Kevin ‘Baloo’ Taylor. Lisa recently completed her Wood Badge training and is continuing to lead a thriving Cub pack. In addition to this role, Lisa has also agreed to support the wider District Cub Scout team in the role of Assistant District Commissioner (Cubs) which she formally began in March this year. Please start to send a copy of your programme to Lisa so that she can come and visit and better support the Cub Scout Sections. Lisa may be contacted at

Hugh Success at the Dursley Town Festival
This year, the theme of the Dursley Carnival Procession was the circus. All Sections of 1st Dursley were represented with Leaders dressed up as a ring master, a clown and a lion (or a werewolf depending on your point of view!). The judges were obviously very impressed with everyone’s efforts as 1st Dursley won first prize!!!
After the procession, everyone was in need of refreshments and where better to take them than at the 1st Dursley Scout Group tea and cake tent? The new banner stood proudly at the front of the tent and the tables inside were laid with tablecloths, fresh flowers and cakes baked by parents. The tea and cake tent attracted lots of customers and a grand total of £276.30 was made ... £50.00 more than in 2009.
A huge well done to everyone involved.
